Projects Will Improve State’s Infrastructure and Create Construction Job

CHAMPAIGN – Governor Pat Quinn today announced capital investments of nearly $2 million for construction projects at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Parkland College in Champaign. The projects are part of Governor Quinn’s agenda to create jobs and drive Illinois’ economy forward.
“These projects will improve a well-used laboratory at the U of I and upgrade the infrastructure at Parkland,” Governor Quinn said. “The projects will also employ a number of construction workers, which will help the local economy.”
The projects will be managed by the Illinois Capital Development Board.
The laboratory in the University of Illinois’ Medical Sciences Building will be renovated for a total of $1,495,366. The work will include reconfiguring the labs; upgrading the technology; replacing walls, ceiling and floor finishes; upgrading power and networking capabilities; and upgrading the electrical, mechanical, plumbing and ventilation systems. Four contracts were awarded for the work. The general construction will be done by Johnco Construction, Inc. of Mackinaw for $653,700, the lowest of four bidders. The electrical work will be performed by Glesco Electric, Inc. of Urbana for $489,000, the lower of two bidders. A & R Mechanical Contractors, Inc. of Urbana will do the ventilation work for $215,000 – they were the lowest of four bidders. And the plumbing portion of the project will be done by Davis-Houk Mechanical, Inc. of Urbana, the lowest of five bidders at $137,666.
The heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems at Parkland College will be upgraded for $500,500 by Commercial Mechanical, Inc. of Dunlap, the lowest of three bidders. The work will involve replacing the control equipment, wiring, thermostats and associated equipment which will improve operational efficiency.
These projects are part of Governor Quinn’s $31 billion Illinois Jobs Now! program, which will support more than 439,000 jobs over six years. Illinois Jobs Now! is the largest capital construction program in Illinois history, and is one of the largest capital construction programs in the nation.
