Governor Quinn Announces $1.2 Million in Upgrades at Mattoon Readiness Center
Project Will Improve State’s Infrastructure and Create Construction Jobs

MATTOON – Governor Pat Quinn today announced a capital investment of more than $1.2 million to upgrade the Illinois Army National Guard Readiness Center in Mattoon operated by the Illinois Department of Military Affairs. The upgrades are part of Governor Quinn’s agenda to create jobs and drive Illinois’ economy forward.
“The Illinois National Guard’s Mattoon Readiness Center plays an important role in the Guard’s logistical readiness and these upgrades will enhance the ability of our soldiers to respond to emergencies here in Illinois and throughout the United States as well as contingencies overseas,” Governor Quinn said. “These upgrades will also employ a number of construction workers, which will help the local economy.”
The readiness center houses the Illinois Army National Guard’s A Co, 634th Brigade Support Battalion of the 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Field Maintenance Shop 5, and Co. L of the Recruit Sustainment Program.
“The 634th BSB and FMS 5 are both vital to the Illinois National Guard’s logistical readiness and the RSP is the first unit for new soldiers entering service,” Brig. Gen. Daniel M. Krumrei, the Adjutant General of the Illinois National Guard, said. “Both these missions ensure the Illinois National Guard remains ‘Always Ready, Always There.’”
The work will involve the construction of a military vehicle parking area, security fencing, gate, associated lighting, and a wash rack. Grunloh Construction, Inc. of Effingham was the lowest of seven bidders for the general construction work with a quote of $1,159,000. Anderson Electric Inc. of Mattoon was the lowest of four bidders at $113,564.
These improvements follow a just completed $2.7 million rehabilitation to the Mattoon Readiness Center’s heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical and plumbing systems.
“Maintenance and improvements at the Mattoon Readiness Center will not only benefit the residents of Mattoon, upgrades like these provide a boost to the entire community through infrastructure enhancements and job creation,” State Sen. Dale Righter (R-Mattoon) said.
The project will be managed by the Illinois Capital Development Board and uses federal funds administered by the State of Illinois.
