Governor Announces Community Water and Sewer Grants

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced more than $24 million in grants to 94 villages, cities, townships and counties for the improvement and upkeep of vital water and sewage infrastructure.

"Improving the water and sewer systems in Illinois is another way to ensure a healthy and safe state for all Illinoisans," said Governor Ryan. "Combining these grants with current Illinois FIRST projects extends and reinforces the state's commitment to address a broad range of quality of life issues."

DCCA will make the grants available through the Community Development Assistance Program (CDAP). The grants will assist communities with projects that address threats to public health and safety, and will mainly benefit low-to-moderate income residents.

In the Village of East Brooklyn in Grundy County a $400,000 CDAP grant will fund the construction of a public water system and a transmission line to obtain water from nearby South Wilmington. An Illinois FIRST grant previously funded the design engineering of the entire project.

"The benefits from CDAP grants are twofold," said DCCA Director Pam McDonough. "In the short term we're addressing issues of public safety and quality of life, but in the long term these water and sewer projects will go a long way in improving the economic viability of that community."

The grants are funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and will be administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (DCCA).
