Ryan Names Gene Callahan to SIU Board of Trustees; Makes Appointments to Boards and Commissions

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced the appointment of Gene Callahan to the Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees.

"Gene brings a wealth of experience to the SIU Board of Trustees," Ryan said. "His diverse background and unique experiences will bring a fresh perspective to the university and will help students, faculty and staff effectively deal with the issues facing the Carbondale, Edwardsville and Springfield campuses."

Callahan, 66, of Springfield, has had a long and distinguished career in both the public and private sectors. Currently retired, Callahan worked with Major League Baseball as director of governmental relations. Previously, he served as Alan Dixon's Chief of Staff for 19 years, spanning Dixon's tenure as State Treasurer, Secretary of State and U.S. Senator. He also worked in the press offices of former Governor Shapiro and then Lt. Governor Paul Simon.

"Gene is longtime supporter of education and a man of the highest integrity. I am confident he will serve the university well," Ryan added.

Callahan replaces George Wilkins on the board. His appointment, which expires January 20, 2003, requires confirmation by the Illinois Senate.
