Lt. Governor Simon voices support for Illinois DREAM Act

Press Release - Monday, August 01, 2011

CHICAGO – Lt. Governor Sheila Simon expressed support for the Illinois DREAM Act today while joining with Governor Pat Quinn as he signed the historic legislation into law. As the state’s point person on education reform, Simon supports the Illinois DREAM Act and the educational opportunities it brings to the students of the state.

“We must open the doors to educational opportunities today to best prepare the leaders of tomorrow,” Lt. Governor Simon said. “The Illinois DREAM Act is a critical law that brings a college education within the reach of more Illinois students. Our children’s achievement should only be limited by their dreams and aspirations, not by their background or financial status.”

Senate Bill 2185 establishes the Illinois DREAM Fund Commission charged with creating and administering a non-profit entity to raise private funds and establish scholarships for students who have resided with his or her parents while attending high school in Illinois; have earned their high school diploma or equivalency in Illinois; have attended school in Illinois for at least three years; and have at least one parent who immigrated to the United States.

The law also allows individuals with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number to participate in college savings programs.
