IEMA Begins Work to Help Local Governments Recoup Expenses from February Winter Storm

Press Release - Friday, March 18, 2011

Springfield - Following approval Thursday of the state's request for federal aid for 60 counties affected by the early February winter storm, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) today said it is beginning the process to help nearly 2,000 local governments in those counties receive that assistance.

"I am proud of the state's response to the worse winter storm we have faced in decades," said Governor Quinn.  "Working together, our state agencies like IEMA, the State Police and more rescued thousands of motorists and saved lives.  And with this federal assistance, the communities that were hit hard can focus on their recovery."

In mid-February, representatives from IEMA and the Federal Emergency Management Agency reviewed expenses submitted by state and local governments related to storm response and recovery.  Those costs are estimated at more than $64 million.

On February 28, Gov. Quinn requested that 60 counties receive federal reimbursement for extraordinary storm-related expenses, including emergency protective measures, debris removal and permanent repair of damages to government-owned facilities and electrical cooperatives.  Local government entities in the following counties are now eligible to receive reimbursement for 75 percent of their eligible storm-related expenses:
