Governor Quinn Observes End of Ramadan in Illinois
Attends Prayer Service to Mark Islamic Holiday

VILLA PARK – September 10, 2010. Governor Pat Quinn today joined community leaders to observe the completion of Ramadan by attending a prayer service at the Islamic Foundation Mosque of Villa Park.

“As many Muslims in Illinois celebrate the end of the Holy Month of Ramadan, I wish everyone a happy Eid,” said Governor Quinn. “As Governor, I believe strongly in every individual’s right to practice their faith and we must do everything we can in Illinois to make sure that everyone is in and no one is left out. We must work together to break down barriers that keep us from working and living together in peace.”

Ramadan is observed during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is considered the holiest month of the year in the Islamic faith. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast each day from sunrise to sunset. Ramadan ends with a three-day festival known as "Eid,” which means "the feast of the breaking/to break the fast."

More than one billion Muslims throughout the world and approximately 400,000 people in Illinois observe Ramadan, which is a time for spiritual purification brought about through fasting, self-sacrifice, reflection and prayer.
