ACA 140th Congress of Corrections Comes to Navy Pier

Press Release - Thursday, August 12, 2010

CHICAGO - As groups of Correctional officers, staff and leaders from across the country descended on Navy Pier they all had one thing in common; to teach and to learn the latest and greatest innovations in the corrections industry.

The Illinois Department of Corrections came to the event not only to learn, but to accept their Accreditation for Tamms CC.  "This facility is only the first to be accredited by ACA" said IDOC Director Michael P. Randle. "We are already planning which prisons will be next in earning this top honor."  Tamms CC went through rigorous testing and training to receive the ACA accreditation.

The 140th ACA Conference offered more than 100 workshops on topics ranging from adult corrections to mental health care and juvenile detention.  In the exhibit hall new and innovative products were displayed to help Departments across the country find the best ways to implement up to date policies and procedures.  There were panel discussions, interactive technology workshops and town hall style- forums.  Health Care staff attended workshops ranging from chronic disease and oncology to post traumatic stress disorder.

IDOC operates 27 prisons throughout Illinois in addition to work camps, boot camps and adult transition centers.  The agency is committed to operating a safe and secure prison system as well as enhancing prison-based treatment, prevention programs and the successful reentry of inmates into society which will lead to lowering recidivism rates.

ACA provides a professional organization for all individuals and groups, both public and private that share a common goal of improving the justice system. Guided by the following principles: Humanity, Justice, Protection, Opportunity, Knowledge, Competence and Accountability; we are enabled to benefit from the heritage of the past, plan and prepare for the future and "to lead" and "to serve" the correctional profession, our colleagues, our charges, and our communities.
