Ryan: $485,000 in Illinois FIRST Projects for Chicago

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan announced today that he is releasing $485,000 in Illinois FIRST funding for projects in Chicago, including $100,000 to El Centro De La Causa for building improvements that will help improve the quality of professional services provided to families in need.

El Centro's facilities need improvements to meet state licensing standards for after-school programs. Other funds will be used to support a deaf children's education program as well as a drug and alcohol prevention program.

Other Illinois FIRST projects announced by Ryan:

  • $100,000 to the Cristo Rey Work Study Program to purchase 44 computers and accompanying equipment and software that will help 400 young people learn the skills necessary for entry-level clerical jobs. The program is associated with Cristo Rey Jesuit High School.

  • $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago for use at the Robert E. Wood Boys & Girls Club to provide after-school recreational and educational programs for 1,300 young people and substance abuse and gang activity prevention programs for the Marshall Square Boys & Girls Club.

  • $50,000 to the McKinley Park Civic Association for educational programs and recreational equipment for youth programs.

  • $50,000 to the Midtown Educational Foundation to supplement a college orientation program that helps 160 students make a successful transition from high school to college.

  • $30,000 to the Little Village Chamber of Commerce to help provide Internet services to member businesses.

  • $30,000 to the 47th Street Chamber of Commerceto purchase equipment and to supplement a small business and entrepreneur development center to aid member businesses and emerging firms.

  • $25,000 to the Community Affiliations for Repairs for the Elderly to purchase equipment and supplies to make 22 homes accessible to the handicapped, and to help remove graffiti from area buildings.

These Illinois FIRST projects were initiated by State Sen. Antonio Munoz, D-Chicago.
