Governor Ryan Announces a $1 Million Plan to Expand Substance Abuse Treatment Services in Rural Areas
CHICAGO -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced a $1 million initiative to expand substance abuse treatment services in rural Illinois. Twenty-one community-based substance abuse treatment programs received funding for the rural initiative, which is administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS).
"Alcohol and drug addiction are diseases that know no geographic boundaries," Governor Ryan said. "This initiative will provide much needed services to ensure that anyone who needs help overcoming addictions have access to treatment regardless of where they live."
Funding will be used to increase staff, to provide transportation for treatment clients and to expand detoxification and treatment services in rural areas statewide. The initiative will also be used to make much needed improvements to the infrastructure to support services for Illinoisans who live and work in southern Illinois.
"In addition to expanding services, the funding also allows our Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse to open a rural office in Southern Illinois," said DHS Secretary Linda Reneé Baker. "This southern site will go far to improve planning, technical assistance and advocacy for substance abuse services in the region. Having an office located closer to these programs will save on travel time and costs to community-based programs located long distances from Springfield and Chicago."
