Governor Announces 2000 Community Development Assistance Program Housing Rehabilitation Grants

Press Release - Tuesday, November 21, 2000

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced that 26 communities will share $7 million in 2000 Community Development Assistance Program (CDAP) Housing Rehabilitation grant awards.

"Home repairs are often beyond the financial reach of our disadvantaged citizens," Ryan said. "The repairs we are addressing are not merely inconveniences, but in many cases present serious threats to the health and safety of the occupants."

The CDAP grants are available to local governments throughout the state for rehabilitation of substandard housing units occupied by low to moderate-income families. Grant funds will be used to correct building code violations of substandard housing. Typical rehabilitation work will include repairs to the mechanical and structural elements of the homes (foundation, heating, plumbing and electrical systems, etc.) as well as roofs, windows, doors and handicap accessibility needs.

The Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs (DCCA) administers the CDAP program. A total of 64 applications were received from across the state requesting more than $17.8 million in grants. A competitive application review was conducted and funding amounts were determined based on applications with the highest ratings.

"Through these grants, state government is helping enhance the quality of life for families across Illinois," said DCCA Director Pam McDonough. "This program not only helps individual families, it also helps transform blighted neighborhoods into areas that residents can be proud of while strengthening the overall community."

Attached is a list of the 26 CDAP grant recipients that will use the funds to rehabilitate single family homes.
