Governor Ryan Announces 2001 Heritage Grant Awards

Press Release - Tuesday, March 20, 2001

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced the recipients of the 2001 Heritage Grants, a new program designed to help not-for-profit organizations and local governments rehabilitate historic properties.

"Illinois' historic structures are valuable resources that we must preserve and enhance for future generations," said Governor Ryan. "These grant funds will be spent on a variety of planning, rehabilitation and restoration projects across Illinois."

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA) received $500,000 in its current budget for the new Heritage Grant Program. Beginning last fall, grant applications were sent to IHPA for reimbursements of up to 60 percent of the historic rehabilitation project cost.

To be eligible for the grant, a property had to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, contribute to a National Register historic district, be designated a landmark under a local preservation ordinance, or contribute to a locally designated historic district. Properties must be owned by local governments or not-for-profit organizations.

The applications were reviewed by IHPA staff and representatives from the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois, a private, not-for-profit, historic preservation advocacy group; and a member of the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council, which helps review other agency grant applications.

"We thank Governor Ryan for supporting this historic preservation initiative in his budget," said Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois (LPCI) President David Bahlman. "LPCI was pleased to help review the grant applications."
