Governor Quinn Applauds Chicago International Film Festival

CHICAGO – October 8, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn today proclaimed October 8 through 22 Chicago International Film Festival Days in Illinois in honor of a two week event that supports and recognizes new filmmakers and their work. The proclamation is in conjunction with the opening of the 45th annual Chicago International Film Festival.

“The film industry has a great impact on Illinois and the City of Chicago. It generates millions of dollars, and creates thousands of jobs while also telling our story to the entire world,” said Governor Quinn. “For 45 years, the Chicago International Film Festival has played an important role in supporting the film business and will continue to carry out this vital mission.”

The Chicago Film Festival is North America's oldest competitive international film festival, according to Cinema/Chicago, the film fest’s presenting organization. The festival is a competitive event with categories for feature films, first and second time directors, documentaries and short films (including animation and student productions).

“This is an exciting day for the hundreds of artists who will be showcasing their work. The Chicago Film Fest is known as one of the best in the country,” Steinberg said. “I want to congratulate Cinema/Chicago and founder Michael Kutza for their work to inspire innovation and talent in Chicago for the past 45 years.”

The film industry has a sizable impact on the Illinois economy and brings thousands of jobs to the state each year. In 2008, Illinois film productions brought in more than $141 million into the Illinois economy making it the second most profitable year on record.
