Governor Quinn Signs Veterans’ Bonus Bill
Illinois’ Thanks Veterans of the “War on Terrorism”

CHICAGO – July 26, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn today signed into law a bill compensating Illinois Veterans for their service during the Global War on Terrorism. Any Illinois Veteran who served on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001 is eligible to receive $100.

“We can never fully repay the debt to the service men and women who have fought for our freedom in the Global War on Terrorism,” Governor Quinn said. “But this initiative shows that we appreciate their service and sacrifice and they are being compensated in the same way our state compensates Veterans of other conflicts.”

The “War on Terrorism Compensation Act” will provide for Illinois Veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom the same service compensation that is provided to Illinois Veterans who served in World War II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, and Operation Desert Storm.

To be eligible for the bonus, Veterans must have been residents of Illinois for at least a year preceding active service. They also must still be serving actively, be honorably discharged, furloughed to a reserve, or be retired. The service member must also have received at least one of two medals awarded for service in the Global War on Terrorism. Applications for compensation must be made through the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

“We believe that the ‘War on Terrorism Compensation Act’ ensures that Illinois recognizes all Veterans, from every generation, for their service and sacrifice,” said Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs Director Dan Grant.
