Governor Quinn Calls a Special Session

CHICAGO – June 18, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn today signed a proclamation calling for a special session of the 96^th Illinois General Assembly to convene on Tuesday, June 23, at 2 P.M.  In his proclamation, Governor Quinn stated that one of the main purposes of this special session is to address the fiscal crisis confronting the State of Illinois.

“There is still much to be done,” said Governor Quinn.  “We must find a way to work together and solve the greatest financial calamity our state has ever confronted.”

On May 30, the Illinois General Assembly passed a partial budget that inadequately funds annual state operations. The General Assembly’s budget cuts $9.2 billion in critical state services, including efforts to assist the state’s most needy children, the elderly, disabled and veterans.

Governor Quinn is against the General Assembly’s budget and is fighting for a fair and balanced state budget that will protect vulnerable citizens and restore Illinois’ financial health.

In his proclamation, Governor Quinn states that the special session will deal with additional issues of ethics reforms, voter recall, restructuring the state pension systems, investing in the state’s infrastructure and enabling the state “to have sufficient resources to meet its financial obligations and to have a responsible Fiscal Year 2010 budget.”
