Ryan Plans Summit On Coal, Energy and Clean Air Challenges

Press Release - Thursday, April 06, 2000

SPRINGFIELD - Governor George H. Ryan today announced that he will host an environmental issues summit this summer that will bring together the coal industry, the electric utility industry, environmental organizations, state agencies and local governments to discuss ways to balance clean air and economic development in Illinois.

"We must be vigilant and careful as we integrate and balance the quality of our air with the economic goals of the State of Illinois. That is why I am asking representatives of these interested parties to work together on common sense approaches and solutions to air quality problems that affect our state's economy and our citizens' quality of life." Ryan said.

In particular, the Illinois EPA will discuss the implementation of air pollution standards necessary to meet federal Clean Air Act health standards. The Department of Commerce and Community Affairs will discuss the number of programs and incentives available to encourage clean coal technology by businesses, as well as the potential for using Illinois coal.

Groups and organizations to be invited include the Illinois Environmental Council, the American Lung Association of Chicago, United Mine Workers, the Illinois Coal Association and each of the major energy utility companies in Illinois.

The meeting will be scheduled for June.
