Governor Blagojevich Appoints New Member to Chicago Transit Board

Press Release - Wednesday, September 24, 2008

CHICAGO - Governor Rod R. Blagojevich today named Sheila Nix to the Chicago Transit Board, the governing arm of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). Nix brings years of state and federal public policy experience to the position.

Nix's years in public service have more than adequately prepared her to serve on the Chicago Transit Board. As Illinois' Deputy Governor from December 2006 to June 2008, Nix helped to create programs like the Seniors Ride Free Program and the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program.

In her earlier tenure with the State, she oversaw the majority of the women's health policies. She spearheaded the adoption and implementation of the State's emergency rule that requires every pharmacy in Illinois that sells contraceptives to accept and fill all birth control prescriptions without delay.

Before working for the State of Illinois, Nix served as Chief of Staff to Senator Bill Nelson of Florida from 2000 to 2003. From 1992 to 1999, Nix served in Senator Bob Kerrey's administration as Chief of Staff and Legislative Director. She also worked on Bob Kerrey's presidential campaign in 1991 and 1992. Nix earned her BS from Creighton University and later her JD from the University of Chicago Law School. She also spent three years as CPA.

The Governor appoints three of the seven Chicago Transit Board members. The Governor's appointees are subject to the approval of the Mayor and the Illinois State Senate.
