Ryan Announces $100,000 Grant For Waukegan Harbor Dredging Project
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today released a $100,000 grant to the City of Waukegan to fund a portion of the engineering and design phase of the Waukegan Harbor dredging project, which is designed to remove contaminated sediment from the inner harbor and the harbor channel to Lake Michigan.
"This important project will remove PCB contamination, restore adequate navigation depths for commercial shipping and be a cornerstone to a lakefront economic revival in Waukegan," Ryan said.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is providing the balance of the funding for the $550,000 engineering and design phase of the project, which is expected to be completed later this year. Actual dredging is expected to begin in 2002.
Contaminated sediment from a portion of the harbor was removed in 1993 as part of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund project. Through the current project, the remainder of the inner harbor and entrance channel will be dredged and the Corps will evaluate the possibility of deepening the channel for expanded commercial use.
The city of Waukegan is receiving the $100,000 state grant in cooperation with the Waukegan Port District, the dredging project's local sponsor.
