Illinois Regulators Suspend License of Marion Physician

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation today approved a consent order that indefinitely suspends the license of Dr. Veizaga-Mendez to practice medicine in Illinois.  The order was approved by the Illinois Medical disciplinary Board this morning and signed by Daniel E. Bluthardt, Director of the Division of Professional Regulation immediately following the Board's decision.

The negotiated settlement was agreed to by the State and Veizaga-Mendez in late September, shortly after he resigned from the Veterans Administration hospital in Marion.  Under the terms of the consent order, Veizaga-Mendez' license is suspended indefinitely.  The Illinois Medical Disciplinary Board meets two times and month, and today's meeting was the first following the signing of the Consent Order.  The Consent Order make clear that Veizaga-Mendez can only seek restoration of his Illinois license if the final disposition of the Massachusetts licensure proceedings results in the restoration of his license in Massachusetts.

IDFPR's complaint against Veizaga-Mendez was filed on April 9, after the Department received certified copies of disciplinary action taken in Massachusetts last summer.  In July 2006, Massachusetts regulators allowed him to surrender his license pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings against his license in Massachusetts.  Veizaga-Mendez had been licensed as a physician in Illinois since 1973.
