Governor Ryan Declares Ronald Reagan Day in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan declared today, "Ronald Reagan Day" in Illinois, honoring one of Illinois' native sons. February 6 is the former President's 90th birthday and an opportunity for all Illinois citizens to reflect on the accomplishments of the native of our great state.

"I am proud to declare February 6, "Ronald Reagan Day," Governor Ryan said. "President Reagan started his life like so many boys from Illinois, dreaming of making a difference, and he followed those dreams to become the 40th President of our country."

Ronald Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois, on February 6, 1911. He grew up in Northern Illinois and considers Dixon his hometown. A 1932 graduate of Eureka College, Reagan was a radio broadcaster, actor, union leader, Governor of California and was inaugurated as President in 1981.

"President Reagan was sworn into office at a difficult time in our country. Inflation was high and so was unemployment," Governor Ryan said. "He brought us out of recession, and many historians believe his defense policies contributed significantly to the end of the Cold War."

The declaration not only serves to honor former President Reagan, but also serves as an impetus for children to study the former President and his achievements and learn more about one of Illinois' favorite sons.
