Governor Announces Funding For Rural And Small Urban Transit Service

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced $551,831 in federal funding for new transit services in rural and small urban areas.

The funds will allow four new transit systems to start service in five counties. Two existing mass transit districts also received funds for new or expanded transit service in seven counties.

"Many elderly and poor residents in rural areas are particularly dependent on public transportation," Ryan said. "They use this service to get to jobs, educational and cultural centers, grocery stores and other retail outlets, social and medical services, family and friends. By increasing areas served by public transportation, we help reduce their isolation."

The federal funds provide operating assistance and are administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. The amount approved by the governor is for the first full year of operations.

The following counties received funds to provide new public transit service: Bond, $45,722; Grundy, $62,500; Jackson, $62,500; and Morgan, $69,278, which also will extend service into Scott County.

Two current transit systems will use their allocations for expanded service. The Rides Mass Transit District received $141,188 for extended service in Edwards, Wabash, Wayne and Hamilton counties. Rides currently also serves Gallatin, Hardin, Pope, Saline and White counties. The South Central Illinois Mass Transit District received $170,643 for extended service in Franklin, Washington and Clinton counties. It currently also serves Jefferson, and Marion counties.
