Ryan Announces The Governor's Family Investment Awards

Press Release - Wednesday, January 12, 2000

CHICAGO - Governor George H. Ryan today announced applications are available for the first ever Family Investment Awards presented by the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women.

The award categories are for Child/Elder Care, Parental Programs and Promotions, and Innovations and Insights. The awards will recognize employer's successful efforts to accommodate the family needs and responsibilities while allowing workers to continue to function effectively in the workplace.

"We are hopeful that those honored will provide leadership by example for other employers trying to meet the evolving challenges of employees and their families in today's workplace," Ryan said. "The Commission will pay particular attention to employers who have made great strides in incorporating these programs into their business atmosphere."

The Commission on the Status of Women was re-created by Governor Ryan with his first executive order.

The 25 Commissioners were appointed by Governor Ryan and represent a bipartisan group of women and men with expertise in a broad range of issue areas.

He challenged them to work with both the private and public sectors to study the issues surrounding women's equity, to examine ways to raise awareness of these issues, to develop collaborative public and private solutions and to make recommendations to the Governor and the General Assembly.

Employers, employees and colleagues are encouraged to nominate a company for the awards. Applications can be obtained by calling Stefanie Xamplas at 312-814-8202. The application deadline is Friday, January 28, 2000.

Governor George H. Ryan and First Lady Lura Lynn Ryan will present the awards at a special awards ceremony later in the year.
