Governor Addresses Rand Afrikaans University on Illinois Globalization, Economic Growth and VentureTECH Programs

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA -- Governor George H. Ryan today ended a three-day stay in Johannesburg with an address on globalization, economic growth and technology at Rand Afrikaans University before moving the trade mission to Cape Town, South Africa.

"The economic viability and stability of this nation's business community gives new hope that South Africa has the potential to be an emerging market in the new economy." Governor Ryan said. "It is that hope that freed these proud people from oppression and has allowed us to take this first step to tie our countries together in prosperity.

"Each member of this delegation received valuable information through seminars, lectures and personal meetings. Each of us has our own personal hopes that Illinois will benefit someday from trade with South Africa and other African nations."

Governor and First Lady Lura Lynn Ryan, were joined in Johannesburg by Sen. Emil Jones, D-Chicago, and a delegation of about 100 community, legislative, business, agricultural, educational, state and locally elected officials to open the first Illinois Trade Office. The trade office will work with local and national businesses to establish a regional business and economic presence for the state.

While in Cape Town, the delegation has a full schedule of business meetings, including a visit to Parliament with South African legislative members and tour of Robben Island where President Nelson Mandela unjustly was incarcerated.
