an Releases $1.6 Million In Health And Wellness Grants

Press Release - Wednesday, January 19, 2000

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today released more than $1.6 million to 92 local health departments throughout the state as part of the first Illinois Health and Wellness Initiative (IHWI).

"The Illinois Health and Wellness Initiative will allow local health organizations throughout the state to provide improved services," Ryan said. "This new program will help local health providers address specific needs in their communities."

The IHWI is a new grant program funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and administered by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). It is designed to support federally established Healthy People 2010 objectives, IDPH's strategic plans and health priorities of local health departments.

The IHWI will enable local health departments to provide resources for a wide array of services including maintaining or improving health through the prevention of cardiovascular disease and unintentional injury, reduction of mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular disease and unintentional injury, promotion of health and wellness through organized and collaborative community efforts, and education of individuals in personal health.

The four-year federally funded program requires local health departments to match 10 percent of their awarded funds.

A list of grantees is attached.
