Gov. Blagojevich proclaims January 3-7, 2005 as Days of Remembrance for the South Asian Tsunami Victims

CHICAGO— In a show of respect for the victims of the South Asian tsunami, Gov. Rod Blagojevich today issued a proclamation declaring January 3-7 as Days of Remembrance for the South Asian Tsunami Victims and ordering that flags at state facilities be flown at half-staff for the remainder of this week.  Earlier today, President Bush issued an Executive Proclamation ordering all federal facilities to fly their flags at half-staff to honor the victims.

 "In this time of mourning, we must stand united in our efforts to honor the victims and to restore peace to this devastated region," said Gov. Blagojevich.  "I urge all Illinoisans to join us in this observance, and to support the relief efforts in any way they can."

The death toll from the tsunami has risen to over 100,000 people, devastating entire communities and leaving thousands without adequate food, safe water, and shelter.  Numerous nations, international organizations, and charities have begun massive relief efforts to assist the victims and prevent further damage.

On Thursday, Gov. Blagojevich issued a statement thanking those who contacted his office looking for ways to help the victims and urging all Illinois citizens to support legitimate charities in any way they could.  Hundreds of Illinois citizens have contacted the Governor's office to locate reputable charities that are directly assisting the victims in South Asia.
