Governor announces $10,000 to West Walker Civic Association

CHICAGO - Governor Rod R. Blagojevich today awarded $10,000 t the West Walker Civic Association for the construction of a handicap ramp at the clubhouse building in Independence Park.

 

"The West Walker Civic Association is a wonderful organization that represents the best interests of the Chicago community and is continually working towards ways that will better their community, and make it more accessible to all of their residents," said Governor Blagojevich.

 

West Walker Civic Association is a non-profit organization whose objective is to obtain the desired improvements and safeguards for the civic welfare of the property owners, licensed business owners and residents of the Chicago area bounded by Pulaski Road on the west, Montrose Avenue on the north, Central Park on the east, and Irving Park Road on the South. The West Walker Civic association is committed to bettering the community and working with elected officials to assist in any way that may be beneficial to the community. They currently have 185 members.

 

The West Walker Civic Association will use grant funds for a two-stage wooden ramp leading to the entrance of the Independence Park clubhouse, to make the building more handicap accessible. The Independence Park clubhouse is used for meetings and events run by various community groups. Many of these groups have elderly and handicap attendees who find it extremely difficult to enter the clubhouse by way of the stairs.

 

"On behalf of the Chicago Community that the West Walker Civic Association represents, we would like to thank the Governor for granting these funds," said Representative Richard T. Bradley. "The Independence Park and clubhouse is a wonderful facility that will not be accessible to all who wish to use it."
