Blagojevich awards $100,000 to the WINGS Program
Funds for new domestic violence emergency facility

CHICAGO- Governor Rod R. Blagojevich today awarded $100,000 in funding to the WINGS Program for a new domestic violence emergency facility in the City of Rolling Meadows.
“For nearly twenty years, WINGS has been administering to the needs of homeless women and children in metropolitan Chicago, so I’m pleased that the State of Illinois is able to assist them in expanding their advocacy at this new facility,” said Governor Blagojevich.
WINGS (Women in Need Growing Stronger) traces its origins to a group formed in 1985 to provide services to the homeless, especially women and children who were the most in need.  Since then, WINGS has grown to a network of 22 locations throughout Chicago’s north and northwest suburbs.  The new facility in Rolling Meadows will act as a “safe house” in providing emergency shelter to women and children who are victims of domestic violence and who are fleeing abusive situations.
“I am delighted that the funding for our domestic violence shelter, WINGS, is being released as this shelter is much needed in the Northwest suburbs,” said State Representative Suzanne Bassi who sponsored the grant.
