Governor releases over $100,000 to promote safe cycling

SPRINGFIELD, ILL.  --Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich recently authorized the release of $123,291 in federal highway safety funds to the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) for a bicycle safety program for the city of Chicago.

 

"There is hardly a better way to enjoy the beauty of Chicago than from a bicycle," said Governor Blagojevich."  "These funds will help to ensure that all cyclists, children and adults alike, can enjoy the city's sites while bicycling safely through Chicago's parks and on Chicago's streets."  

 

The $123,291 grant, administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation's (IDOT) Division of Traffic Safety, will continue the "Safe Routes to School" program, which encourages safe bicycling habits for children.  Also, CDOT will be able to expand the Bike Ambassador Public Outreach program with more scheduled appearances and additional Spanish-language educational materials.  The project is part of Chicago's "Safety in Motion" Plan.

 

According to Trisha Sternberg, project director and a city planner, these programs will help Chicagoland bicycle riders reduce the likelihood of injuries and fatalities.  The Outreach Programs will also be implemented in cooperation with law enforcement officials.

 

The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides the funding for the grant, which began November 1, 2003.
