SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced the appointment of United States Environmental Protection Agency official Martin A. Sandoval to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.

"Martin Sandoval is a respected expert in his field and a proven administrator," Ryan said. "He is committed to improving the safety and quality of our water supply and our environment." Sandoval is the first Hispanic American appointed to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District provides water to more than five million people and treats more than 1.4 billion gallons of water a day in the Chicago metropolitan area. In addition, the district controls 76 miles of navigable waterways that are part of a national system linking the Atlantic Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico.

"The work of the commission affects the health and welfare of millions in the metropolitan area," Sandoval said. "I hope my nearly 16 years of experience will have a positive impact on the commission and the people of Illinois."

Sandoval is currently a Senior Program Analyst for the Superfund Division of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. In addition to his professional duties, Sandoval is President of the Senka Park Advisory Council of the Chicago Park District. Senka Park, on the Southwest side of the City of Chicago, is home to Chicago's first school/park campus.

Sandoval was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Frank Gardner. Sandoval's term ends in November, 2000. The appointment does not require Senate confirmation.
