RYAN ANNOUNCES $5 MILLION IN MUSEUM OPERATING GRANTS
SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today awarded $5 million in grants to museums and other facilities for programs that enhance educational opportunities for students.
"These grants provide funding for increased technology and will expand learning programs and enhance classroom education for students by creating partnerships between museums and schools," Ryan said.
Facilities can use the grant funds for a variety of projects, including enhancing technology links between museums and schools, involving students directly in museum programs or projects, expanding interactive programs between museums and classrooms, providing specialized training programs for teachers, funding student internships at museums or creating new educational programs for students.
Grants are awarded based on an applicant's average operating expenditures. Illinois museums which are operated by or located on land owned by a unit of local government, or which have an annual attendance of at least 150,000 and offer educational programs to school groups during school hours were eligible for funding.
