GOVERNOR RELEASES $1.3 MILLION TO IMPROVE LOCAL TRANSIT SERVICES

SPRINGFIELD -- Gov. George H. Ryan today released more than $1.3 million to communities and transit districts throughout the state for the purchase of specialized buses and vans. These paratransit vehicles are designed specifically for the elderly, people with disabilities and riders in rural areas.

"These funds will allow communities to make needed improvements to their transit systems," Ryan said. "In many cases these new buses and vans will replace older vehicles that are no longer fit for daily use."

Through a state-coordinated one-stop shopping program, a combination of state and federal funds will be used to purchase 25 vehicles for 14 communities or transit districts throughout the state. Local agencies must submit applications to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Necessary vehicles are then purchased by the state on behalf of the local entities through a centralized purchasing contract in order to receive the best prices.

"In order to serve those with special needs and maintain safe and reliable public transportation, we must invest in our communities," Ryan added.

All the vehicles will be fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The following is a list of recipients and the type of vehicles to be purchased:

  • Springfield Mass Transit District, Springfield. $53,876 for the purchase of one medium-duty paratransit vehicle.

  • Henry County, Cambridge. $56,000 for the purchase of one medium-duty paratransit vehicle.

  • City of Quincy. $186,000 for the purchase of one medium-duty paratransit vehicle and one heavy-duty paratransit vehicle.

  • Rides Mass Transit District, Rosiclare. $186,000 for the purchase of one medium-duty paratransit vehicle and one heavy-duty paratransit vehicle.

  • South Central Illinois Mass Transit District, Centralia. $95,000 for the purchase of one mini-van and one medium-duty paratransit vehicle.

  • Boone County, Belvidere. $78,000 for the purchase of two raised roof paratransit vans.

  • Bureau County, Princeton. $39,000 for the purchase of one raised roof paratransit van.

  • River Valley Metro Mass Transit District, Kankakee. $95,600 to be used toward the purchase of three heavy-duty paratransit vehicles and one medium-duty paratransit vehicle.

  • City of DeKalb. $78,000 for the purchase of two raised roof paratransit vans.

  • City of Freeport. $112,000 for the purchase of two medium-duty paratransit vehicles.

  • City of Macomb. $78,000 for the purchase of one minivan and one raised roof paratransit van.

  • Massac County, Metropolis. $186,000 for the purchase of one medium-duty paratransit vehicle and one heavy-duty paratransit vehicle.

  • Peoria County, Peoria. $39,000 for the purchase of one paratransit minivan.

  • Tazewell County, Pekin. $56,000 for the purchase of one medium-duty paratransit vehicle.
