Governor Ryan Signs Teacher Certification Bill, Honors Valedictorians at State Fair

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan signed a bill today to improve teacher certification at a special ceremony to honor high school valedictorians.

House Bill 1436 amends School Code to provide additional ways for teachers with initial certification to achieve standard certification, including earning a Master's Degree in an accredited program.

HB 1436 also requires administrators seeking to renew their certificate to develop a renewal plan which includes their continuing education program. The bill also changes the $3,000 one-time payment to Master Teachers to an annual $3,000 incentive pay.

"These initiatives to encourage the continued growth and development of our teachers were the result of the work at our education summit," Governor Ryan said. "Throughout my administration we have worked closely with teachers and other education leaders to help improve the training and resources available to our classroom teachers."

HB 1436 was sponsored by State Sen. Dan Cronin (R-Elmhurst) and House Republican Leader Lee Daniels, (R-Elmhurst) along with State Representatives Mary Lou Cowlishaw, (R-Naperville); Jeffrey Schoenberg (D-Evanston); Beth Coulson, (R-Glenview); Jim Watson (R-Jacksonville).

The Governor also commended 175 high school valedictorians for their achievements and predicted they would be future leaders.

"These students have laid a strong foundation for launching into life's adventures," Gov. Ryan said. " They deserve to be recognized for all their hard work and dedication."
