Governor Declares City of Chicago and Cook County Disaster Areas

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today declared the City of Chicago and Cook County disaster areas after a flash flood hit the metropolitan area last Thursday. A severe storm system accompanied by heavy rainfall moved through the city and county on August 2, causing flash flooding, which resulted in water in basements, damage to homes and a disruption of commerce.

"We will do everything we can to help the citizens of Chicago and Cook County recover from this flash flooding," Governor Ryan said. "This disaster declaration will speed the recovery efforts in these communities and pave the way for any possible federal assistance."

The storm dropped as much as 4 inches of rain in two hours resulting in significant damage to homes and disrupting public services throughout the area. Preliminary reports indicate that several hundred homes have suffered major basement flooding. IEMA, FEMA and Chicago officials continued collecting damage reports over the weekend and will begin a Preliminary Damage Assessment this afternoon.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency will coordinate damage assessment with local officials to determine if additional federal assistance is necessary.
