Ryan: $10.5 Million in Illinois FIRST Projects for Chicago

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan announced today that he is releasing $10.54 million in Illinois FIRST funding for projects in Chicago, including $10 million to Northwestern University forbiomedical laboratories and offices that are part of the construction of the Lurie Medical Research Center at Fairbanks Court and East Huron Street in Evanston.

Other Illinois FIRST grants announced by Ryan:

  • $200,000 to the City of Chicago to help with the construction of a new Oriole Park Branch Library. The city is contributing $4,536,000.
    This project was initiated by State Sen. James A. DeLeo, D-Chicago.

  • $150,000 to the Lake View YMCA to support the start-up and operation of a Youth and Teen Center.
    This project was initiated by State Sen. Lisa Madigan, D-Chicago.

  • $125,000 to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago to develop a program for autistic children through the Center for Young Children with Autism.
    This project was initiated by State Sen. Ira I. Silverstein, D-Chicago.

  • $50,000 to the Chicago Park District to purchase an air conditioning unit, a scoreboard, tables/chairs and bleachers for Hiawatha Park.
    This project was initiated by DeLeo.

  • $15,000 to the Chicago Public Schools to purchase calculators, Edupress "Quick Flip Questions for Critical Thinking", and the Junior Great Books Program for Mather High School.
    This project was initiated by Silverstein.

     Illinois FIRST funds are not part of the state budget's General Revenue Fund. Recently, lagging tax collections brought on by a slowdown in the national economy and the terrorist attacks of September 11 have forced the governor to order spending cuts in the General Revenue Fund that amount to less than 2 percent of total spending. Illinois FIRST monies are derived from separate accounts in the state budget -- the Road Fund and the Fund for Illinois Future -- as well as through the sale of state bonds.
