Governor Urges Illinoisans to Take Part in Remembrance Day

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan called on Illinoisans to mark the three-month anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks with a moment of silent reflection and reminded all citizens that the state's official ceremony will be broadcast live via the Internet.

"We will use Internet technology to make this important ceremony available to the people of Illinois," Ryan said. "I especially urge teachers and school officials to log on to the state's homepage so their students can share the experience."

Last week, President Bush asked all states, U.S. embassies and military bases around the world to organize remembrance events on December 11 to mark the anniversary. Illinois' remembrance event will held at the Firefighters and Police memorials on the southwest side of the State Capitol grounds at 8:30 AM, central time. Participating will be the Illinois National Guard, police and fire departments and veterans organizations. The public is invited.

Matt Bettenhausen, the deputy governor for public safety and the state's director of homeland security, will be the lead speaker.
