First Lady Adds Children's Books To Collection, Celebrates Family Literacy Day

Press Release - Monday, November 01, 1999

SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois First Lady Lura Lynn Ryan accepted a collection of children's books from Illinois Library Association President Carolyn Anthony in celebration of Family Literacy Day.

"We are so pleased to receive such a broad range of books from different libraries all across the state, many of which are by Illinois authors," said Mrs. Ryan.

"Given the strong support Governor George H. Ryan has shown for libraries in his previous position as Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian, the Illinois Library Association is proud to make this donation to the First Family and the people of Illinois," said Anthony.

The books will be added to the collection at the Executive Mansion library in Springfield. By adding to the children's collection in the library, the Ryans hope to encourage families to spend time reading to each other.

"Family Literacy Day is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to come together and discover the joy of reading," said Mrs. Ryan.

According to the National Center for Family Literacy, "National Family Literacy Day" is a time to celebrate the impact parents have on their child's learning and the foundation of the family in education."
