Governor Announces Grant To Kankakee River Conservancy District
KANKAKEE -- Governor George H. Ryan today released a $150,000 grant to the Kankakee River Conservancy District to assist with land management and water resource protection in the Kankakee River basin in Kankakee County.
"The Kankakee River Conservancy District is an important partner in the effort to protect one of the state's highest quality stream systems," Ryan said. "This grant will enable the District to expand its role in enhancing this significant ecosystem."
The grant provides funding for planting trees, shrubs and native grasses on previously disturbed and highly erodible lands owned or managed by the District. Funding is also provided for removing public safety hazards in and near the Kankakee River channel and for police patrols on the river during the summer boating season.
The funding will also be used for developing educational and interpretive materials regarding the Momence Wetlands, the area of the Kankakee basin between Momence and the Illinois-Indiana state line.
The $150,000 was appropriated by the General Assembly in the FY 2000 budget through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
