Governor Ryan Encourages Illinois' Participation in MADD's National "Tie One on for Safety" Campaign

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today encouraged Illinois citizens to participate in the national "Tie One On For Safety" campaign launched by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

"While we want everyone to enjoy the holiday celebrations, we also want you to be responsible and sensible," Gov. Ryan said. "We must stop the crashes that occur because of driving while impaired."

The nation-wide initiative-formerly known as the "Red Ribbon" campaign is in its 14th year. The red ribbon symbolizes the driver's concern with the dangers of drunk driving and serves as a reminder that drunk driving continues to be a problem that costs lives daily.

Last December, 122 people lost their lives on Illinois roadways. Thirty-seven of those people died as a result of alcohol-related crashes. In the 48 hour period from Christmas Eve until the end of Christmas day, 12 people died in 10 fatal crashes. Three of the 10 crashes were alcohol-related.

"When you drink and get behind the wheel, you are putting your life and the lives of others in jeopardy," Gov. Ryan added. "Eliminate that possibility by planning to have a designated driver, use a cab or take public transportation.

"DUI is a problem that will only go away when drivers take more responsibility for their behavior. It's very simple-if you drink, don't drive."
