Governor Quinn Announces $1.4 Million for Galva National Guard Armory Renovation

GALVA – Governor Pat Quinn today announced more than $1.4 million for the renovation of key infrastructure systems at the Galva National Guard Armory in Henry County. The federally-funded project is part of Governor Quinn’s agenda to create jobs, drive Illinois’ economy forward and maintain the National Guard’s readiness. Contracts were recently awarded for the project following a competitive bidding process. The work addresses some of Illinois’ critical infrastructure needs and creates good construction jobs. 

“Investment in transportation is one of the best ways to grow our economy and create jobs,” Governor Quinn said. “This project will help us continue to ensure Illinois has a strong, 21st century infrastructure while creating construction jobs and boosting the area economy,”

The Galva Armory project includes contracts for four portions of the work. CPI of the Midwest Inc. of Rock Island was the lowest of six bidders for the general remodeling and rehabilitation work on their bid of $229,990. Commercial Mechanical Inc. of Dunlap, Illinois outbid one other firm for two portions of the project: plumbing on their quote of $241,500 and heating and air conditioning for $629,000. Johnson Contracting Company Inc. of East Moline received the ventilation contract with a bid of $202,000, the lowest of three submitted. J.B. Contracting of LaSalle received the electrical contract with a bid of $135,400.
 
The project includes upgrading the mechanical system, including the replacement of boilers and the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. This also involves replacing controls, updating ductwork, replacing associated piping and upgrading the electrical system. The work also provides for upgrading the plumbing system, including the replacement of the domestic and hot water distribution systems, plumbing fixtures, sanitary sewer lines and abating asbestos-containing materials. The Galva Armory is a 32,864-square-foot, one-story masonry building constructed in 1953.

The project will be administered by the Capital Development Board, which manages all non-road, state-funded construction projects. 

“Citizen soldiers need modern training facilities, and projects that update our aging fleet of National Guard Armories are greatly appreciated,” State Senator Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap) said. “The much-needed remodeling and HVAC improvements will certainly make for a better environment for our national guardsmen and enable them to train more easily.”
