State to kick off "Summer BASSET Olympics"

Press Release - Monday, July 30, 2012

CHICAGO—As people throughout the world gather to watch the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games, many Illinois liquor establishment owners and employees will be competing in their own must-see event – the 2012 Summer BASSET Olympics!

To date, nearly 800 people in Illinois’ hospitality industry have registered for BASSET (Beverage Alcohol Seller/Server Education & Training) classes being held throughout the state over the next two weeks.

“We are pleased to learn that many of the classes are already sold out and 800 more servers will learn how to serve the people of Illinois responsibly,” says Gloria L. Materre, executive director for the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC), of the training sessions that help liquor sellers/servers spot fake ID’s and the signs of over-consumption.

The ILCC has partnered with a variety of local BASSET providers to teach the classes free-of-charge, which are limited to two employees per liquor establishment, preferably managers and owners. “By showcasing our local partners’ successful programs, we will demonstrate the value of professional training for businesses and the community at large,” says ILCC Education Manager Ted Penesis.

Many local officials – including mayors, police chiefs, and other community leaders – will attend these sessions, literally sitting side-by-side with those serving in the liquor industry. “Participants will learn why nearly 200 local jurisdictions currently require BASSET certification and how this initiative can increase public safety and enhance economic vitality,” adds Materre.

A limited number of seats are still available at many of the scheduled BASSET sessions. To accommodate even more participation, the registration deadline has been extended. For the list of classes, please visit www.DontBeSorry.org and click the “Olympics” link.

Seats are filling up fast and reservations cannot exceed two employees per liquor establishment. To register or for additional information, connect to www.DontBeSorry.org!
