Ryan Redesignates Gidwitz as Illinois State Board of Education Chair

SPRINGFIELD -- Governor George H. Ryan today announced the redesignation of Ronald J. Gidwitz as Chair of the Illinois State Board of Education.

Gidwitz, 56, was first named Chair in 1999. He is a partner at GCG Partners, a private investment firm in Chicago.

"Ron Gidwitz has worked diligently in guiding Illinois' efforts in improving our schools. He brings a wealth of private sector expertise to this important job," Governor Ryan said. "He has worked successfully with the Board to address the issue of standards for teachers and students in Illinois schools."

This redesignation requires Senate confirmation and the term as Chair expires in April, 2003.

Governor Ryan also appointed another member of the State Board of Education:

Richard A. Sandsmark, 53, of Belvidere for a term ending January 10, 2007. Sandsmark is an Engineer with Hamilton Sundstrand, a Division of United Technologies, Inc. The appointment requires Senate confirmation.

All members of the State Board of Education are paid expenses only.
