Ryan Opens US 67 Jacksonville Bypass

Press Release - Thursday, September 30, 1999

JACKSONVILLE -- Governor George H. Ryan today officially opened the final section of the US 67 Jacksonville Bypass.

The Governor opened the three mile, $31.7 million northern section of the bypass from Morton Avenue to Illinois Route 104. The entire six-mile, four-lane bypass runs from IL 104 northwest of Jacksonville to Interstate 72, and includes major interchanges at Morton Avenue and IL 104, as well as 10 overpass structures.

"The completion of the Jacksonville Bypass is a continuous of the state's commitment to improving our infrastructure system for the benefit of our citizens," Ryan said.

"This bypass, and future improvements to US 67 throughout west-central Illinois will provide a safe, efficient and needed north-south highway link for peoples businesses in this part of Illinois," Ryan said. "An improved US 67 will help Jacksonville and other communities along the corridor retain existing businesses and attract new development. That will further open this region of the state to additional economic development."

Work on the northern portion of the bypass started in October 1996. Southern sections of the bypass from I-72 to Morton Avenue were previously opened in 1979 and 1998.

Ryan's $12 billion, 5-year Illinois FIRST program will provide nearly $142 million for further improvements to US 67. Those projects include:

  • Nearly $41 million for engineering, land acquisition, and construction of 12 miles of four lane from Interstate 72 in Jacksonville south to the Green County line.
  • $21.2 million for engineering, plans, land acquisition, and construction of 2.6 miles of US 67 west from the end of the Jacksonville Bypass at IL 104.
  • $80 million for engineering, land acquisition, and construction of 10.6 miles of new four-lane pavement from Godfrey to Jerseyville in Madison and Jersey counties.

"I want to recognize the efforts of the Corridor 67 group," Ryan said. "Their determination to provide an improved US 67 is a model of perseverance and dedication to a cause. The member of this group should be commended for their efforts in getting this bypass programmed and constructed."
